A day at Phillip Wain

It has been a while since I've took some time off for a pampering session. I used to go frequently for facial, gym and if I decided to pamper myself a little more, I would also go for a massage. The only thing is that these are all from different places and it can be quite a hassle to book and if I were to do all together in a day – it's quite difficult taking into consideration the travelling time.

Very recently, I was speaking to a friend, Eugenia and was introduced to Phillip Wain. If you haven't heard of it, Phillip Wain has been known as an Asian leader in fitness and beauty industry for more than 30 years. Phillip Wain is the region’s premier practitioner of the pioneering one-stop total beauty service. I came across places offering massages and facials but have never came across one that offers facial, massages, gym, classes altogether in one place. The extensiveness of services surprised me and got me quite curious to visit this place to take a look.

So I visited Phillip Wain a few weeks back and made a couple of treatments to try out within the day. Phillip Wain is located at a very accessible location –  in the heart of Orchard Road, Mandarin Gallery. The place is located at the top of the building and occupied the entire level. It looks narrow upon entering, but the space is very well utilised – rooms were adequately built for comfort and privacy. There is also a little bistro counter, health juice bar situated inside, serving an assortment of healthy food and drinks. The resting corner seems really comfortable as well, might be a good place to take some rest, read a book in between your treatments. Definitely living up to its name of being a one-stop service fitness and beauty place.

I was quite skeptical prior to the visit, wondering if the standard of the services offered by Phillip Wain would be on par with places that focus solely on a particular treatment. I tried 4 services at Phillip Wain:
1. Facial – Phillip Wain's signature Aqua EX3 Face Spa
2. Massage – Advance Cell Reborn Therapy
3. Slimming – Triple Action Magnetic RF Therapy
4. Fitness – Pilates Personal Training

The experiences were surprisingly very enjoyable and I felt that the standard of services exceeded my expectations. The professionalism of the staff were commendable and I could tell they were each very experienced in their own fields. One thing I could tell was that they do have a rather large team of staff and I'm guessing that because they hire experts in each area. Moving on to the treatments – starting with slimming treatment, facial and lastly, pilates.

In all honestly,  I do in fact have my own facial place that I usually visit, but this face treatment that I did at Phillip Wain was much more comprehensive than my usual. I suppose it was also the type of treatment, and in this case, it was the Aqua EX3 Face Spa.

The Aqua EX3 Face Spa is one of the most signature treatments of Phillip Wain and I would recommend you to try this if you are looking for facials focusing on whitening and lifting. Benefits of this facial includes
- Reducing fine line, wrinkles and age spots
- Improving skin tone and texture
- Promoting regeneration of collagen and elastin fiber

This treatment uses an advanced technology combining mechanical and chemical peeling to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. Using a unique spiral tip, it helps to gently exfoliate the surface of your skin to remove skin’s impurities, sebum and dead skin cells while hydrating and replenishing your skin with essential customized solutions. It then ended off with the snail lifting massage – I enjoyed this tremendously. Pressure was great and the beautician knew the right spots to press. This massage uses filtered liquid snail mucin and highly concentrated nutrients from plant stem cells to firm up skin, promote cells regeneration to restore skin’s elasticity and reduce wrinkles. Benefits of the snail mucin:
- Brightening and moisturizing
- Improving skin elasticity
- Anti-bacterial, Anti-aging and Whitening

This got to be one of the best massages I'd in a while. This massage combines the east and the west technique, and uses firm bio-regulating renewal cream, evening primrose oil. What's really unique is that this particular massage uses energy stone and the experience was very enjoyable. I liked the effect of the hot stones on my body and the pressure exerted by the masseur was good as well. I felt very energized after the session was done and this is one treatment I'll definitely strongly recommend you to try.

I also made an appointment to try the triple action magnetic RF therapy – which is one of Phillip Wain's latest slimming and contouring treatments. As quoted from them, " This treatment uses a patented technology which combines a matrix of multi-polar radio frequency (RF) along with magnetic pulses that work in synergy to effectively reduce cellulite, improve skin elasticity and deliver substantial circumference reduction. The Pulsed Magnetic Fields (PMF) helps to stimulate the synthesis of collagen, triggers the proliferation of fibroblasts and promote new blood vessels. Simultaneously, the RF helps to induce collagen and elastin synthesis by causing controlled thermal damage in the dermis, which triggers self-repair mechanism of skin tissue to improve overall skin condition and enzyme mediated lipolysis to decrease subcutaneous fat mass and ameliorate blood circulation."

The treatment was very comfortable and it came with massage to promote blood circulation. The staff performing the treatment was very experienced and I enjoyed the treatment very much. The only thing is that for slimming treatments, it requires a prolonged period and including a change of diet to see the results. So it was too early for me to gauge the effectiveness of this treatment through a session.

My first time trying Pilates and I loved it. Eugenia recommended me strongly to give this a try and I'm glad I did. Phillip Wain has two full-time instructors who have years of experience. Besides, the room was fully equipped with an extensive range of machines/equipments for all to use. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience too and definitely felt that I've worked all parts of the body after the session. If you would like to join pilates, you might want to check out their classes!

I think it's absolutely convenient to have one stop for all the services and this definitely is a bonus for all the busy women out there. Besides this, you might be interested to know that Phillip Wain is an all-ladies fitness and beauty place so it's great for women who are more comfortable in a female-only environment. Bathrobe and towels are provided and shower/locker area provides ladies essentials such as shower gel, shampoo, hair dryer, facial remover, cream, and even eye cream (another plus point).

Mercedez-Benz Driving Experience 2012

Ethan and myself participated in the Mercedez-Benz Driving Experience a week back and it was our first time joining one. The entire event took place from 8.30am all the way to 5.30pm and we had about 7-8 activities lined up for us on that very day.

The experience was amazing and I had such a great time test driving those cars! Still feeling awed about the experience after the event. If I'm not wrong, they had the complete series of Mercedez-Benz cars for us to test drive on the day itself, except for the SLS (The car which Rosie Huntington drove in transformers) and I was actually hoping to get my hands on its steering wheel! But no complaints because we had the chance to drive every other car and learn awesome stunts (which I was pretty worried for the cars back then because there were stunts that involved sharp turning, excessive braking, eg drifting etc). With that said, the instructors did mention that there shouldn't be any cause for concern at all because of the robustness of the Mercs – their cars will handle anything thrown their way. And true enough, I was very impressed with the cars and their performances.

Also, I would think that the driving experience is a brilliant marketing/sales approach- persuasive. I could see Ethan was pretty sold after the event!

Greeted by this beautiful red car upon arrival -  The SLS Convertible.

Itinerary for the day.

Attended a briefing before the activities started.

The SLK350!

Instructors were flown in all the way from Australia to guide us.

I like the colour combination of the interior – The SLK350.

The awesome car from The Transformer's movie.

We each had to do a final test to see if we remembered what we were taught for the day.

A BIG thank you to Mercedez-Benz and to the wonderful Aussie Instructors!

Treating my hair with cocktail shots

Just took this shot yesterday and this has got to be one of the better hair days.

I recently just paid a visit to my trusty Salon Vim once again to look for John for a much-needed treatment given that I've permed and dyed my hair for at least a month for the past half a year. He strongly suggested for me to try this brand new hair treatment (called the Redken Chemistry Treatment) that is just available at the Salon and he went on telling me enthusiastically, on how cool and effective this treatment is and that didn't take long to get me convinced. The cool thing about the treatment is that it's mixed and created just like a Cocktail, very interesting indeed and I managed to get this shot after googling. This was the set of products used:

(Credits to reieek)
Just check out that Cocktail Shaker!

As quoted from their website, apparently this Redken Chemistry Treatment focuses on treating two key types of hair distress which unfortunately,  BOTH are my distresses:
1) CHEMICAL DISTRESS: caused by overuse of chemical services such as haircolor, lightening, perming or straightening
2) MECHANICAL DISTRESS: caused by normal wear and tear from blow-drying, curling and flat irons, and every day brushing

There are 6 'SHOTS' that are up to the stylist's discretion to mix and customize, based on your hair condition:
1. Extreme Shot Phase for distressed hair
2. Color Extend Shot Phase for color-treated hair
3. Clear Moisture Shot Phase for normal/dry hair
4. All Soft Shot Phase for dry/brittle hair
5. Smooth Down Shot Phasee for very dry/unruly hair
6. Real Control Shot Phase for dense/dry/sensitized hair

I'm pretty amazed by it when John showed me, and he basically mixed in 2-3 of the above that he thought I'd need to treat, followed by pouring each shot into the Cocktail Shaker & shaking it vigorously. Yes, amused but amazed. But I'm sure It would be even more amazing if he added on bartending tricks! Heh.

One of my pet peeves is definitely the unevenness of hair colour at the crown of my head, especially when the roots grow out. So I actually did a touch-on on the roots before I did my treatment. Thank goodness for trusty Salon & Stylist, they are perfect doctors to my hair, knowing when to treat it, let it rest and so on and so forth. Hair colour in the first picture is specially mixed by John too ;)

Before treatment starts.

Boohoo, i think my hair line is getting quite obvious. And do you know a healthy scalp means that you have at least 2-3 strains of hair growing out of a hair follicle? I scanned my scalp before and most of my hair follicles have merely one strain growing out. Definitely have to watch my diet because all these are cause and effect of unhealthy food intake etc.

Done and satisfied. Definitely have to find a day and learn from John on how to blow my hair like this! The ends are curled just with a hairdryer and a brush without a straightener nor curler.

Thank you JOHN! ;)

Tuesdays weekly are golf lessons with David from Ministry of Golf (MOG). Been a month plus since i'm learning from him and my swings are much better than before though I still have much room for improvement. Thankful to receive this sponsorship, if not I wouldn't have met a coach like him who is ever so patient with me.

One unique thing about MOG is that they help to make lessons more enjoyable by grouping students up, and at the same time, it will help to make fees more affordable because the fees decrease along with the increase in number of students per learning group. But of course, they are definitely ethical to make sure that a group will not be overcrowded and that each student gets his/her fair share of attention.

Ethan joined me on last Tuesday.

Golf outfit of the day #GOOTD.

On a random note, I received a bag of beautiful goodies from Lancome a few days ago. They are extremely generous and how lucky am I. Can't wait to get started with the new makeup toys! Will definitely share and review more on those that I like. ;)

Tried on the Lancome Liquid Eyeliner first and I must say it's absolutely easy to use with its pen form. Love the texture as well and it's my current favourite eyeliner. Will probably do a detail eyeliner entry soon but for now, here're two shots of myself, with eyes drawn with the Lancome Liquid Liner. Thank You for the beauty treats, Lancome.  <3

Arbite Loving

Phew, the past few days have been absolutely packed with back to back activities/work but I did take some time out to unwind. ;)

Caught The Amazing Spiderman & I thought it has quite a captivating plot given that I was glued to the screen without looking at my watch even once. Was also expecting Tobey Maguire to star in it and only realized an hour before the movie that Spiderman was replaced by Andrew Garfield. Somehow, I prefer Maguire for Spiderman (random, but I feel that he looks like Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean actor) though Garfield is better looking in my opinion. Perhaps I'm just used to seeing Maguire as the character and Garfield looks too skinny for a guy.

Selene and I were discussing on the movie yesterday and I didn't know Garfield starred in The Social Network Movie and that he's actually the founder's best friend!

Guys just look so different when they suit-up, just like when we girls dress up.

I remember I was very engrossed in The Social Network movie, but somehow I just can't put the face together and I don't even remember seeing him anywhere. Guess that's why the entertainment industry is always such a competitive one.

Apparently, Selene said from what she knew, Garfield also portrayed the true character of Spiderman. I grew a liking to him and the character after watching too, can't wait for the next!

If you are aware, I was learning golf together with my friend, Justin, previously under a private coach. Attained the PC (Proficiency Certificate) but it doesn't exactly allow me to go on the greens (except a selected few) as it's only a temporary certification to show that I know the basics. So I was already thinking of taking it further by enrolling in the handicap course which technically enables me to go onto the greens in Singapore to play instead of only the driving range. If you are unsure of what Handicap is, as taken from Wiki, "A handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's playing ability based on the tees played for a given course. It is used to calculate a net score from the number of strokes actually played, thus allowing players of different proficiency to play against each other on somewhat equal terms. The higher the handicap of a player, the poorer the player is relative to those with lower handicaps."

Also, I was quite frustrated over all these months, or even a year, that I still can't master my swing and achieve consistency. Ethan has been playing for 7 years or more with weekly golf even, and it feels pretty dejected each time I head to the range with him (he can see that too, and have been trying to help me!). For some reasons, I really didn't like my previous coach, it feels like I just know the basis on how a golf swing works and that's about it. I personally don't feel that he has a passion for coaching nor does he have the drive to make sure the students know their stuff well. So I was actually looking around for a good golf academy/coach to start training up within these few months, and oh boy, you can guess how how how thrilled I was when I got to meet a Golf sponsor just recently!

The company is called Ministry of Golf, which is owned by three local guys and they have a group of professional golfers/coaches under them. Well, my coach is a young guy, prolly 27ish (have not exactly asked him on his age) and I had my first official lesson just last Friday. To be honest, I was very skeptical about it at first, and unintentionally stereotyped him as less experienced given of his young age as compared to most coaches. But after last Friday's coaching, I found myself being extremely impressed with him and went on blabbering about how good he is to Ethan that very evening. I must have sounded very convincing but yet coupled with the fact that my golf swing is kinda flawed/atrocious, it's pretty funny how Ethan gave me that I-really-believe-you-but are-you-sure look. But he was also glad that I'm so inspired by my coach, and I certainly have to agree that it should be that way. Hmm..wondering why I didn't feel that way before.

Anyways, I'll mention more on it here again as lessons progress, hopefully to be of help to those golf enthusiasts who are intending to learn soon. ;)

So before my lesson last week, I asked Ethan to bring me for a leisure hit at his club, with the aim of refreshing my memory (the last I hit was two months ago) so I wouldn't look too silly during my lesson.

Doing a sports outfit of the day #SOOTD (in particularly for golf).
Love this Polo Dress I got in Bangkok last year and wearing my favourite Taylormade Cap + Adidas golf shoes (with spikes).

Fooling around with the driver. I'm definitely not at all near being capable of hitting the driver well yet!

This sponsorship is not paid at all and surprisingly, there are also no hard and fast rules about the collaboration. So I'll be sharing only if I really think it's good.

In fact, even for assignments that are paid and we have to blog, we (a few other bloggers that I hang out with) do share the same consensus that there is no point in twisting the facts, giving untruthful reviews or anything but the honest opinions.

The most I will probably do is to be constructive with the words if something is really way below expectations (but seldom the case, if not they wouldn't spend money promoting it!), but there is certainly no need in hiding the any truthful opinions because you might buy/try what we blogged about after, and it wouldn't be at all good for both you and I if the product/experience differs greatly from how we portrayed it to be. Well, yes I do really hope that the readers are convinced with whatever that is paid to write on, but I also know that there it's not going to benefit anyone including myself in both short/long run. This might just affect our credibility easily and make you guys lose the trust in us with just a single untruthful review! And losing the trust equals losing the readership, so noooo, I'm not going to risk that. ;)

P.S: Perhaps except for food. It is subjective, expectations would probably be different and chefs vary at times too. But in general, if you have tried what i tried, and think what I raved about is good, then we probably have quite the same expectation for food. (;

Last week, the girlies plus myself decided to treat ourselves a nice meal one random night and we popped by Arbite which is located near our cribs. It wasn't my first time visiting the cafe, but it was certainly my first time dining in for their dinner. Love how atmosphere of Arbite, very ikea-like, cozy and unpretentious, it does feel as though I'm dining in a house literally.

We had an absolutely sumptuous meal that night, and thank you to the owner, Marc, for taking time out to introduce his creations to us, and to educate us on food and beer pairing as well. Definitely an informative session and I didn't know beer can complement mains well too. ;)

Truffle fries which is not on the menu, but available upon request! It comes with truflle mayo too, delicious!
Selene feels that this is the best truffle fries set she has ever eaten, but I personally think it's as good as the really tasty ones I ate before. I just wish it's shoestring fries instead!

Food we had for the night:
- Arbite Breakfast, all day (S$15.90), Green Tea Fettucini with Smoked Duck (S$24.90), Smoked Duck and Foie Gras Risotto (S$29.90), Truffle Beef Burger (S$18.90), Pappardelle with Mushrooms and Parma Ham (S$19.90), Gula Melaka Tiramisu (S$8) and My Wife's Chocolate Cake (S$8).

My favourites for the night would be the Smoked Duck and Foie Gras Risotto, Pappardelle with Mushrooms and Param Ham, Gula Melaka Tiramisu and My Wife's Chocolate Cake. The best was the Smoked Duck and Foie Gras Risotte which was absolutely rich, creamy, definitely of the best risotto I've had. The desserts were simply delectable too, can't believe we four girls finished both the desserts within just 10 minutes!
